About Us
Our Story
Michigan Martial Arts Publication was born out of a deep passion for preserving and sharing the rich martial arts heritage of the Great Lakes State. Founded by Julian Myftiu, our mission is simple: to document the stories, pioneers, and traditions that shaped martial arts in Michigan — and to make that history accessible to practitioners, historians, and enthusiasts alike.
A Living History
Michigan's martial arts community has a story worth telling. From the earliest dojos of the early 1900s to the vibrant schools and masters who shaped generations of students, this history deserves to be preserved. Our flagship titles — Michigan History of Martial Arts: First Edition and the expanded Michigan Martial Arts History: Second Edition — chronicle that journey with rare archival photographs, new biographies, and historical records that have never before been compiled in one place.
The Second Edition goes even deeper, featuring expanded content, additional lineages, and stories that didn't make it into the first printing. If you loved the First Edition, the Second Edition will feel like coming home — with new rooms to explore.
Beyond History
Our commitment to the martial arts community extends beyond history books. We also publish titles on the living arts — the practices that keep martial artists healthy, grounded, and moving well for life. Achieve Longevity Through Qigong explores the ancient art of Qi Gong as a path to vitality and inner balance. Tai Chi for Life: A Practical Path to Longevity and Balance offers a thoughtful guide to Tai Chi as both a movement practice and a lifelong health system.
These aren't just books — they're companions for the journey.
Who We Are
Julian Myftiu is a martial artist, researcher, and author with a lifelong dedication to the arts. His work is driven by a belief that the people and traditions behind martial arts deserve the same careful documentation as any other cultural heritage. Every book published under the Michigan Martial Arts Publication banner reflects that commitment — researched with care, written with respect, and offered to the community with pride.
Whether you're a seasoned practitioner, a curious historian, or someone just beginning to explore the martial arts, we're glad you're here.
Train well. Live long. Know your history.
